Below are the
three very direct steps that you can use for yourself when you are competitive
by nature and wanting to collaborate more with others with success.
Step 1
Let go. This may
be a tough one for most people, but the truly successful individual understands
how to allow other people to contribute with their talents. Letting go
sometimes mean stepping down from wanting to initially take the lead, and
seeing others strengths first. The natural desire for the high achiever is to
take immediate control over the situation, but in order to work well as team,
he/she must observe the other team mates strengths.
Step 2
Have your team mates
be accountable. It is important that once everyone is clear on their strengths,
that each person keeps the other person accountable. This is important, because
this is where trust comes into play. As a high achiever you have to learn to
trust your teammates so that things get accomplished more smoothly and
efficiently. Without this trust, which I believe is “earned trust” the team
cannot move forward in a positive direction.
Step 3
Get others
involved. As a high achiever it is easy to just feel the need to always do it
yourself. However, the more you get others involved the wider the audience you
get to meet, and the bigger your sphere of influence becomes. This ability as a
high achiever to know the strengths and weaknesses of your team is vital to the
overall success of the team. Knowing when to get others involved and getting a
good team chemistry going is essential to the overall success of the project.
